Why use PRP for hair loss?

PRP, platelet rich plasma, it a fantastic treatment for skin rejuvenation and promoting hair growth. But before we get info the reasons why PRP helps hair rejuvenation, be need to understand the life cycle of a hair follicle. Hair goes through three phases. The first phase is the hair follicle growing (Anagen), this lasts 2-7 years. This phase is where PRP works. The next phase (Catagen) lasts 1-2 weeks, this is when the hair follicle becomes detached and the hair is lost. People normally lose 50-150 hairs every day. The final phase (Telogen) is the resting stage, about 10-15% of our hair follicle are at this resting phase at any one time, it lasts about 5-6 weeks.

PRP works on the hair follicle in that first stage. It promotes blood vessel formation improving the hair growth and it stimulates proliferation of various cells involved in hair growth. It can be used on any area of the scalp, so treatment can be targeted to the areas where it’s needed.

PRP can also be used following hair transplants to improve the outcome of the transplant initially and maintain the results going forwards. It can be used for male and female pattern baldness, slowing the thinning process of the hair follicle and affecting the hormone derivative which causes male and female pattern baldness.

There are lots of causes of hair loss: ageing, stress, hormone changes, medications, over styling (from the pulling effect on the hairs), and some medical conditions. These include autoimmune conditions, such as Alopecia and thyroid disorders, and vitamin deficiencies. It is important you consult with your GP to identify if there is a root cause, a blood test may be indicated.

So, there are lots of benefit to using PRP for hair loss and stimulating hair growth. Due to the length of the hair cycle, you may not notice the benefits of the treatment until a few weeks post treatment. For greatest benefit we recommend a course of treatment, either 3 or 5 treatments 1 month apart. PRP can be used on an ongoing basis regularly to maintain the benefits. some studies have shown that 3 treatments done at monthly intervals can increase hair count by 25-40%.
